The City of Boston hosted its East Boston “Makers + Movers” event on September 6th at Central Square. The event attracted residents of all ages to give their ideas about how to design and orient the proposed bicycle station as part of the redesign of the square. Using low-tech tools (markers, paper, and Legos) and high-tech tools (a vinyl cutter and 3D printer), participants designed key aspects of the hub, including new signs about bike repair and bike parking. The Maker tools are effective in engaging a younger demographic that typically does not participate in planning events. Facilitation was held in both English and Spanish. Over 50 bicycle helmets were handed out, mostly to children.
